This reactive report explores the fashion trends we set out for SS 21 in the light of this current world crisis. The three trends cover Women, Men and Youth sectors for apparel and accessories. In a new move, we’ve combined the youth section for each trend into a genderless melting pot of ideas.
Menswear is split between styles that follow a fitted retro/classic line, or contemporary shapes full of volume. Styling moves forward with mixed layering – combining sportswear with tailoring and leather or denim. These casual mixes effectively soften the harder lines of tailoring and refresh sporty styles. Detailing is key throughout, but it’s the unexpected design flourishes that’s pushing this season’s menswear forward.
Unique styling is one of the biggest inspirations this season, and looks that stand out most are those with an individual edge. Sometimes it’s as simple as an unexpected print or colour but it’s the maximal looks that are the most directional. In addition to these maximal looks are bold statement pieces with exaggerated proportions or those with misplaced details, unexpected openings or additional panels. Suits are softened with full wide-leg trousers, a jogger-style cuffed pant or a pair of shorts. Full sportswear looks are out, but some individual pieces added to more formal outfits add an authentic vibe. Leather and leather-look fabrics have exploded onto the scene, not just for biker jackets, but reptile-pattern coats, trousers, skirts, shorts and even softly structured suits.
This gender mix reveals how streetstyle fashion is breaking down barriers with more inclusive ways to style accessories. Over 620 images capture the direction of street trends for autumn/winter 2020. One of the overarching style trends is for single-item looks. These consist of a single statement piece, throwing shade on the rest of the outfit and creating a strong focal point – think statement shirts, outerwear and knitwear. Other big ideas to emerge are top-to-toe looks – another purposeful and confident direction. Sportswear is still part of the scene but the impact is softened and merges into other looks. Core casualwear and tailored styles turn to minimal, clean lines in less-heavy shades of stone, concrete, off-white, tan and beige.
